Argentine Forces Seize Nearly 100kg of Marijuana on Paraguayan Border

A new blow to drug trafficking in the 'hot' border province of Misiones has once again exposed the vulnerability of the Uruguay River coast as a corridor for drug trafficking. The Argentine Naval Prefecture seized over 99 kilos of marijuana in the area of Puerto Rosario, in San Javier, during an operation based on criminal intelligence. The estimated value of the seized goods exceeds 356 million pesos. The operation began when personnel deployed a hidden observation post after receiving information about a possible drug shipment towards the natural harbor area. Previously, on February 25, the force had seized over 900 kilos of marijuana in Montecarlo, also in Misiones, after detecting two rowboats crossing the navigation channel from the Paraguayan side to the Argentine coast. When the occupants noticed the police presence, they rammed the gate of a private property, abandoned the vehicle, and fled into a wooded area. The San Javier case adds to other recent seizures showing the intensity of the drug trade in the region. During the afternoon, officials detected a vehicle heading towards the coast and set up a controlled surveillance. Despite the immediate reinforcement of the operation with additional personnel, witnesses, and a detection dog, the suspects managed to evade the cordon and could not be located. The procedure ended with the seizure of 132 bricks distributed in eight bundles, as well as a vehicle, a cell phone, and other items that are now part of the judicial investigation. The repetition of these procedures in a short period shows that the river front in the northeast remains one of the most demanding points for federal forces. The magnitude of the problem can also be measured by official figures: in September 2025, the Ministry of National Security reported that drug seizures in the first half of the year had increased by 27% compared to the same period in 2024, rising from 11,890 to 15,128 procedures.
